Gold Prices Fell: What Is 14K Jewelry Worth After the Pullback?

Reader angle: The jewelry angle: turn a headline into item-level math

A lower gold headline can feel personal when you have a ring or chain to sell. But a market move is only one part of an appraisal. The September 28, 2026 late-U.S.-session Kitco report put spot gold near $4,131 per troy ounce, down about 3.8% that session. Your jewelry's purity and recoverable gold weight determine how that reference price applies.

A simple 14K example

Suppose a plain 14K gold chain contains 10 grams of recoverable 14K metal, with no stones or non-gold parts. At approximately 58.5% gold, it contains about 5.85 grams of pure gold. One troy ounce is about 31.1035 grams, so at the dated $4,131 spot reference, the theoretical gold content is 5.85 ÷ 31.1035 × $4,131, or about $777. That is an illustrative gross metal value—not an offer, guaranteed melt return, or the amount a buyer must pay.

Why the actual offer can differ

  • A clasp, repair, stones, or other components can change the recoverable gold weight.
  • Karat stamps are clues; testing confirms the actual metal content.
  • Refining, resale, and business costs affect a buyer's offer below theoretical spot value.
  • A signed or collectible piece may merit a separate resale evaluation instead of scrap pricing.

What was behind this drop?

Kitco described higher oil prices, rising Treasury yields, and expectations of another Federal Reserve rate increase as part of the September 28 selloff. Those are market-wide pressures. They do not make a genuine 14K piece less pure, and they do not tell us where tomorrow's gold price will land.

Use the math as a question to ask

At an appraisal, ask to see the test result, the relevant weight, the live spot reference, and how the final offer was calculated. If a ring contains a meaningful diamond or has a recognizable maker's mark, ask whether it was assessed separately. The September 28 example will age; the method remains useful.

Example uses a September 28, 2026 spot snapshot. Actual prices and offers change, and the illustrative 10-gram item is not a real appraisal.
